国际翻译日由国际翻译家联盟（International Federation of Translators, 简称国际译联，英文简称FIT）于1991年提出。国际译联选择了早期西方《圣经》学家、《圣经》拉丁文本的译者圣杰罗姆(Saint Jerome)的生日作为国际翻译日，因此国际翻译日又称圣杰罗姆日(Saint Jerome Day)。这是一个表达翻译职业自豪感和加强翻译的日子。从1992年开始，国际译联根据国际形势的发展，每年会提出不同的翻译日主题，并发布主题文章，各国翻译组织和翻译工作者在国际翻译日前后举办各种活动进行庆祝。
